Preparing to Teach a Class
Here are a few things to keep in mind when planning your class.
Prepare to teach a 60-minute yoga class. Your style and choice. Be creative.
Keep in mind attendees' ages and abilities range from kids to beginners to long-time practitioners. Many people who come to the parks don't necessarily practice on a regular basis or might be new so accessibility is very important. Keeping classes easy flowing with plenty of modifications and less challenging is advised.
You're welcome to bring any marketing materials or studio info. We appreciate you volunteering with YMU and would like to support you where you teach.
Teachers + Karma Crew
Plan to wear your Yoga Moves Us shirt (if you have one)
Map route to class location
Be sure to check the Park Set up so you know where to set up for class.
DAY OF CLASS CHECKLIST
Karma Crew + Teachers
Arrive 20-30 min early
Clear park of any debris from yoga area
Use the two QR codes in the Park Kit to get the students registered for the class is what should take place in the 10-15 min prior to the start of class. Have each unregistered student pull out their camera and scan the QR code to access the form. This process takes less than a minute for each form. If you don’t get everyone before class, remind students at the end of class to see you or the Karma Crew volunteer to register. It helps to remind them this is important for us to continue running our park program.

Since yoga is hosted at the park, please keep in mind the uneven ground of the park and other conditions which might be different than a studio (sun exposure, unlevel ground, etc). If needed, you can move to a spot that will be most comfortable for students is key.
It is suggested to use the headset and speaker equipment so all students can hear your instruction, despite how far your voice might carry. It’s always a good idea to check in with your students, in the beginning, to make sure everyone can hear you.
Prepare to start a couple of minutes late if people are still showing up at the start time. This is a great time to remind everyone to register for the class.
Welcome students and engage with your audience
Announcements and Introductions - Introduce yourself and the karma crew
Offer accessible options and allow time for individual expression during class.
Invite the class to take care, drink water and rest at any time.
Take a headcount of students to report after class.
Option to stay in front of the class and demo or move around. Be mindful of the range of the microphone.
Playing music is optional and should not be too loud or a distraction from the practice. Refrain from music with explicit language or profanity as this is a family-friendly event.
There may be other activities at the location, be prepared to go with the flow and adapt.
At the end of class, feel free to give yourself a short plug.
Collect any lost & found items and report to Park Lead
Please leave the park area clean and pick up any trash left behind.
